BBQ Alberta

Cost

What an outdoor kitchen costs in Alberta.

Most companies answer this with a range wide enough to mean nothing, on purpose, so you have to call. Here is the actual shape of it — by build size, then line by line, then the four things that move the number more than anything you will pick from a catalogue.

By size of build

A grill island

$8,000 – $20,000

One run. A built-in grill, some storage, a working counter either side.

The right answer far more often than the industry admits. If you cook for four and entertain occasionally, this is usually where the money stops making a difference.

A working outdoor kitchen

$25,000 – $60,000

An L or a U. Grill, side burner or griddle, refrigeration, a sink, real prep space and seating.

The most common full build. This is the point where the kitchen replaces trips back inside rather than supplementing them.

An outdoor room

$60,000 – $150,000

Multiple cooking stations, premium appliances, stone, a covered structure, lighting and often a fire feature.

Built for entertaining at scale, and usually designed alongside the pool and the landscape rather than after them.

Estate scale

$150,000 and up

Bespoke everything. Pizza oven, full bar, dedicated smoker, custom stone, an architectural structure.

Designed with an architect or landscape architect. At this level the kitchen is part of the building, not an addition to the patio.

Line by line

Where the money actually goes.

Cabinetry30 – 45% of the build

The single biggest line, and the one people underestimate most. This is where the alloy decision lands, and where the difference between a ten-year kitchen and a two-year one is actually made.

Appliances$2,000 – $30,000+

A good built-in grill starts around $2,000. Add refrigeration, a side burner, a griddle and an ice maker and this line moves faster than any other.

Countertops$80 – $250 per sq ft

Granite and porcelain slab sit at the sensible end. Exotic stone and thick mitred edges climb quickly.

Structure and shade$6,000 – $60,000

A pergola, a roof extension or a full pavilion. Frequently skipped in the budget and then added later at higher cost.

Utilities$1,500 – $15,000

Gas, electrical, water and drain. Short runs are cheap. A detached kitchen on a large lot can make this the largest single line in the project.

Installation15 – 25% of the build

Performed by a licensed contractor, not by us. Quoted separately and paid to them directly, so you can see exactly what it costs.

Ranges are market orders of magnitude for Alberta, not a quotation. Your number depends on your site, your material choices and current lead times.

What moves it

Four things, in order of effect.

01

How far the utilities have to travel

Attached to the house, a gas and power run is minor. Forty feet across a finished patio, it becomes trenching, restoration and permits. This is the most common source of an unexpected number.

02

Whether it is covered

An uncovered island in Texas needs outdoor-rated refrigeration, heat-tolerant surfaces and materials that survive hail. Building the shade first is frequently cheaper than specifying around its absence.

03

Whether the slab already exists

Designing before the concrete is poured lets the rough-ins land where the kitchen actually wants them. Retrofitting into a finished deck adds cost and noise to every subsequent decision.

04

How much of it is stone

Stone is the finish everyone photographs and the line nobody budgets. Substituting on the counter is the fastest way to bring a project back to a number without changing how it works.
